Labour party leader Anthony Albanese has claimed victory to form the 47th government in the Australian Federal elections which took place on May 21. Incumbent Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader, Scott Morrison has conceded the defeat for his party and has tendered resignation before the poll results were declared.

The Prime Minister in-waiting Anthony Albanese has delivered the victory speech despite being unclear whether the Labour Party will be in a position to form the government on its own or not. The Green party performance has been better this time.

The rise of labour party is not being seen as a good sign among those who are waiting in wings to migrate from the countries like India to settle in Australia. The labour party may make the criteria of settlement in Australia more stringent for migrant people. Although the outgoing liberal party led coalition government was also not very liberal in absorbing the migrants by providing permanent residence and citizenship rights.

It may be mentioned here that Indian diaspora population is the second largest in size after the migrants of British heritage in Australia.
