New Delhi: The Parliamentary Committee expressed surprise at the government not having any ‘official data’ of the Indian diaspora spread across the world, saying that the Indian Consulates/High Commission/Mission abroad should have extensive and close contact with the NRIs and encourage them to register the NRIs so that their data can be generated.

This was stated in the report of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs headed by BJP MP PP Chaudhary, tabled in Parliament on Wednesday.

When asked about the remittances sent by the NRIs, the External Affairs Ministry said that no exact data is available on the amount sent to their families from other countries.

However, the World Bank report on the subject has revealed that in 2021, NRIs sent $87 billion to families and India leads the category.
