Justice U.U. Lalit appointed as 49th Chief Justice of India

New Delhi: Justice Uday Umesh Lalit has been appointed as the 49th Chief Justice of India.

Justice Lalit will take charge of the post on August 27. Current CJI N.V. Ramanna is set to retire on August 26. “In exercise of the powers conferred under Clause 2 of Article 124 of the Constitution, the President is pleased to appoint Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Judge of the Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from August 27, 2022,” the Law Ministry said in a notification.

Justice Lalit’s tenure as CJI will be less than three months. He will retire on November 8.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana congratulated Justice U.U. Lalit on his appointment as his successor.

In a letter to the Law Ministry on August 3, CJI Ramana had recommended justice Lalit’s name as his successor.

Justice Ramana exuded confidence that Justice Lalit will take the judiciary to new heights through his able leadership.
