Indian students should stay ‘alert’ due to hate crime in Canada, central government warns

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday has warned passengers and students studying in Canada. These people have been advised to be careful and cautious. India issued a travel advisory saying there has been a “rapid increase” in anti-India activities in Canada.

The government has said that the Ministry of External Affairs has spoken with Canadian authorities on hate crime cases and anti-India activities in Canada. Canadian authorities have been urged to investigate these crimes and take appropriate action. “Those responsible for these crimes have not yet been punished in Canada.

“In view of the above incidents, Indian citizens and students are appealed to be cautious and careful while travelling and studying in Canada,” an India release said.

Objected to Khalistani referendum

India has reacted sharply to the “so-called Khalistani referendum” in Canada, saying it is “highly objectionable” that radical and extremist elements were allowed to carry out such politically motivated activity in a friendly country. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told reporters that India has taken up the matter with the Canadian authorities through diplomatic channels and will continue to take up the issue with Canada.

Indian student killed in firing

A few days ago, an Indian student who was injured in a shooting in Ontario, Canada, died on Saturday. Apart from this, two other people, including a policeman, also lost their lives in this incident. An Indian student was injured in a shooting in Milton last Monday, a statement issued by the Hilton Regional Police Service (HRPS) said. He was identified as Satwinder Singh. “He died during treatment at hamilton government hospital,” police said.
