India abstains from UN General Assembly vote on “lasting peace” in Ukraine

United Nations: India on Thursday abstained from the UN General Assembly on a resolution highlighting the need to achieve “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” in Ukraine at the earliest in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter.

The draft resolution titled ‘Principles of the Charter of the United Nations underlying a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine’ brought by Ukraine and its supporters was adopted by the 193-member General Assembly. The resolution was passed with 141 votes in favour and 7 against it. India was among the 32 countries that abstained from voting.

The resolution called on member states and international organizations to redouble support for diplomatic efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine in accordance with the Charter.

Underlining Ukraine’s internationally recognised border and waters, the resolution reiterated that Russia immediately, fully and unconditionally withdraw all its military forces from ukraine’s territory.
