Mahatma Gandhi’s statue vandalised at Canada university campus

Ottawa: Another statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalised on a university campus in Canada’s Burnaby in British Columbia, Consulate General of India in Vancouver gave this information on Tuesday.

The statue was installed in Peace Square on of Simon Fraser University in the town of Burnaby.

“We strongly condemn the desecration of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the pioneer of peace, on the Burnaby campus of Simon Fraser University and urge canadian authorities to immediately investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the consulate general tweeted.

The incident took place on March 23 near city hall in Hamilton city in Canada’s Ontario province after a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalised and sprayed-painted.

In July last year, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalised at a Vishnu temple in Richmond Hill, Canada, drawing strong condemnation from the Consulate General of India in Toronto.

At that time, the embassy said in a tweet that “We are saddened by the desecration of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at vishnu temple in Richmond Hill. This criminal, heinous act has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Indian community in Canada.”
