Toronto: The drivers in Toronto who block intersections during red lights will face heavy penalty from authorities. This is called blocking the box and the city is preparing to crack down on such drivers.

The city has appealed to the province that in this way, if any driver is trapped in the middle of the intersection, then they should be fined heavily.

The City Council has approved a resolution moved by Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie in this regard and the city has also appealed to the Ford government to impose strict fines in this regard. McKelvie said that due to wrong driving behavior, other people’s time and money are wasted and the jam in such a place looks different.

Currently, the blocking the box carries a fine of $85, but the city wants the fine to be up to $450. If someone gets caught in blocking the box in a community safe zone, the city wants to impose a fine of $500 instead of the $125 fine it now imposes. The city has also asked the general manager of transportation services to find other solutions in place of fines.
