After 24 years, outsiders from Gandhi family, Kharge elected new Congress president

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge today won the election of party president.

After 24 years, a leader from outside the Gandhi family has been elected president of the country’s oldest party.

Of the total 9,385 votes polled, Kharge polled 7,897 votes while Shashi Tharoor polled 1,072 votes. 416 votes were rejected.

Meanwhile, Tharoor accepted defeat and congratulated Kharge.

Earlier, Shashi Tharoor’s team has written to the Congress’ principal election authority raising the issue of very serious irregularities in Uttar Pradesh during the election for the post of party president.

The team said that all the votes cast for the post of Congress president in Uttar Pradesh should be disqualified. Tharoor’s team has raised the issue of serious problems during the elections in Uttar Pradesh as well as Punjab and Telangana.
