Chandigarh: A sub-committee comprising Sikh sects, Sikh organisations and Sikh scholars has been formed by the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht to look into the issue of publication of Guru Granth Sahib at the protest sites and protest sites.

The action has been taken by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh at a time when the ‘Waris Punjab De’ organisation has used the holy form as a shield during the gherao of the police station in Ajnala and the incident is being condemned.

So far, the Akal Takht and the SGPC have been reluctant to say anything in this matter. In a statement issued by the personal assistant of Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, the Jathedar said that the serious issue of carrying and lighting the holy form at protests, dharnas and occupied places, where the publication of Guru Granth Sahib is expected to hurt the honour of the Guru Sahib, will be considered by the Panj Singh Sahiban at Sri Akal Takht and a decision will be taken in this regard.

But earlier, he had formed a sub-committee on the basis of all Sikh sects, Sikh organizations and Sikh scholars to look into the matter. The sub-committee has been directed to send its report to Sri Akal Takht within 15 days.

He said the report of the Sikh scholars would be considered by the Panj Singh Sahibans and a final decision would be taken in this regard.

It may be recalled that Amritpal Singh, the head of sikh organization ‘Waris Punjab De’, and other activists had taken the vehicle with the holy form while gheraoing the Ajnala police station yesterday.

The palanquin vehicle was taken to the inside of the police station. During this incident, there was also a violent clash between the activists of the organization and the police. The action was taken by the Sikh organisations to demand the release of one of their associates from the police and quashing of the case registered against them.

BJP leader slams Amritpal Singh

Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, leader of the Khalsa College Governing Council and a member of the BJP’s core committee, strongly criticised Amritpal Singh for the incident of taking the holy saroop to the police station. He said that the person who commits such an act cannot be the heir of Punjab.

He also condemned the Punjab government for kneeling before the evil-doers. He appealed to the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht to take strict action in this matter.
