Akali Dal fields 64 candidates, Sukhbir Badal to contest poll from Jalalabad

Chandigarh:Ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled to be held next year, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has already fielded its 64 candidates, attempting to strike a balance among the party’s old guards and fresh candidates.

The Akali Dal will contest this elections on 97 seats as 20 have been allotted to its alliance partner Bahujan Samaj Party under a pre-poll deal.

SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal to contest elections from Jalalabad. The party’s patriarch and five-time chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia, representing Lambi and Majitha constituencies, respectively, are not there in the list.

While, of the 64 listed names on Monday, 22 had already been announced by party president Sukhbir Badal during party’s outreach programme (Gal Punjab Di) launched on August 18 and suspended on September 3 after farmers protesting against Centre’s three farm laws made attempts to disrupt the Akali poll meetings.
