At least 127 killed, over 180 injured after riots at Indonesia football match

MALANG: At least 127 people have been killed and several others injured in violence that broke out in a stadium during a football match in Indonesia. Two policemen are also said to be among the dead. Indonesian police confirmed the incident.

According to the information received, the incident took place in East Java. A football match was being played at a football field in East Java.

A large number of spectators had gathered at the ground to watch the match. When the result of the football match came, the fans who came to watch the match on the field got angry. Angry fans entered the football field and started creating a ruckus.

According to the information, the disappointed fans got upset with the defeat and started fighting among themselves.

After the fighting, there was a stampede and most of the people died in the stampede itself. The Games have been suspended for a week following such a ruckus at the ground.

Reports are also coming in that the administration could not control the crowd. More people than the capacity of the stadium had come to watch the match.

Niko Afinata, Indonesia’s police chief in East Java province, said supporters of the losing side took to the field and started violence after the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya. He said that 40,000 spectators were present to watch the match. Around 3,000 of them rushed to the ground. Authorities had to release tear gas to control the situation, following which there was a stampede and cases of suffocation were reported.

Afinta said in a statement on Sunday that 127 people, including two police officers, were killed in the incident. 34 people died inside the stadium and the rest succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
