At least 16 dead in floods after heavy rain in Kentucky

Washington: The death toll from flooding in low-lying areas caused by incessant rains in the eastern region of Kentucky, U.S.A., has risen to 16, with six children among the dead.

State governor Andy Beeshier has said the death toll could still rise further. Hundreds of houses have been destroyed and many families have been rendered homeless.

In many counties, all the people have been flooded. Thousands of people are forced to spend day and night without electricity.

The governor, who had declared the emergency situation yesterday, said in a video statement that they have lost many families. The relief teams are engaged in rescue operations with the help of the National Guard and these teams are searching for the missing people.
