Canada to ban single-use plastics over the next 18 months

Ottawa: In a bid to safeguard environment, Canada’s federal government is going to ban companies for making plastic or importing plastic bags by end of this year and from exporting them by the end of 2025.

This unprecedented move is being taken by the government to protect exaggerating environment due to pollution and climate change.

Prime Minister sadi that in Canada, about 16 million plastic straws are used every day. No one wants to see single-use plastic like this end up on our coasts or in our green spaces. That’s why we promised to ban them and that’s why, today, we’re taking the final step to deliver on that promise.

The government announced that the ban on the making and importing of plastic checkout bags, cutlery, straws and other items comes into effect in December 2022 – and selling these items is prohibited as of December 2023. Over the next 10 years, this ban will result in the estimated elimination of over 1.3 million tonnes of plastic waste and more than 22,000 tonnes of plastic pollution. That’s equal to a million garbage bags full of litter.

“We’ll continue to lead the way in reducing plastic pollution, and we’ll continue to take strong action to protect biodiversity and build a clean future. For more information on this ban and the timeline announced today,” Trudeau said in a statement.
