Canadian Sikh businessman Ripudaman Malik cremated

Ottawa: Sikh leader Ripudaman Singh Malik was cremated at the Five River Funeral Home on the banks of the Fraser river in the Delta here today.

According to information, unidentified assailants had shot dead Sikh businessman Ripudaman Singh on July 14 last.

Office bearers of BCs Gurdwara Committees and other Sikh bodies were present at the cremation here today. The speakers reiterated the demand for a thorough probe suspecting the role of Indian agencies behind the murder. He also condemned communal divisions by spreading rumours after the businessman’s murder.

Born in the year 1947, Ripudaman Singh Malik came to Canada in 1972. In the year 1986, he played a pioneer in the establishment of a cooperative bank called Khalsa Credit Union here and started the first Khalsa School in the same year, which now has many branches.

Malik was charged with conspiring to bomb an Air India plane from Canada to India on June 25, 1985 but was acquitted by the high court in 2005 due to lack of evidence.

Two years ago, Malik and his partner had got the Guru Granth Sahib printed in defiance of the orders of the Akal Takht Sahib, which they had handed over to the local gurdwara after discussion.

Malik was again embroiled in controversy after he wrote a letter of appreciation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi two years back. Police are yet to trace the killers even a week after the incident.
