Vancouver: Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature,  Julie Dabrusin has  announced  that the Government of Canada is partnering with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, and other public and private partners to protect vital Rocky Mountain landscapes in southeastern British Columbia.

“The conservation of the Kootenay Forest Lands reflects Canada’s commitment to protecting nature while reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions. With the endorsement of the Ktunaxa First Nations, partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and the support of governments, industry, and communities, we have secured lands that will provide lasting ecological, cultural, and community benefits. This achievement reflects the strength of partnership and Indigenous leadership in safeguarding Canada’s natural heritage for generations to come.” Minister said.

The Minister made the announcement in Vancouver alongside the   Randene Neill, British Columbia’s Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, accompanied by Catherine Grenier, President and Chief Executive Officer, Nature Conservancy of Canada  and Kathryn Teneese, Chair of the Ktunaxa Nation Council.

The Kootenay Forest Lands will help maintain one of North America’s most important wildlife corridors, supporting at-risk species such as the grizzly bear, the badger, the whitebark pine, the bull trout, and the bighorn sheep. The area also contains rare high-elevation grasslands, old-growth forests, and streams that feed the Elk River—an essential waterway for ecosystems and communities. Transitioning these lands from industrial forestry to conservation-focused management will enhance carbon storage, reduce emissions, and build resilience to climate-related risks such as wildfire and flooding.

British Columbia’s Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, Randene Neill  said that the British Columbia has the greatest diversity of species, ecosystems, and habitats of any of Canada’s provinces or territories.

“Our government celebrates the securement of the Kootenay Forest Lands, which is the result of years of dedication and rewarding partnerships. We will continue to work with First Nations, communities, land trusts, and conservancies, and other interested parties throughout British Columbia to preserve areas of natural beauty and ecological importance.” Said Neil.

This project supports Canada’s commitment to conserve 30% of land and water by 2030 and contributes to global efforts to halt biodiversity loss and fight climate change. Through the Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund, Environment and Climate Change Canada is contributing $20 million to complete the Kootenay Forest Lands project, one of Canada’s largest private land conservation projects to date. This complements a contribution of $7 million made through the Old Growth Nature Fund to an earlier phase of the project. With the support of the Ktunaxa First Nations, in whose territory the project is located, Kootenay Forest Lands will continue to deliver lasting benefits for biodiversity, climate resilience, and community value.

The Government of Canada’s Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund is a $1.4 billion, ten-year fund to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by five to seven megatonnes by 2030. The Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund will achieve this by supporting projects that reduce loss, restore, or improve the management of ecosystems such as forests, wetlands, peatlands and grasslands. These projects will also benefit important habitats for migratory birds, species at risk, and other species of cultural and/or socio-economic importance to local communities.

The Government of Canada’s Old Growth Nature Fund was a $50 million, three-year fund supporting the Province of British Columbia and their partners to secure up to 4,000 km2 of old growth coastal and interior rainforest.

Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund projects also advance reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, strengthen science and knowledge on natural climate solutions, and support policies and tools that improve biodiversity and climate outcomes across Canada.

Ottawa: With the last minute nomination filed by 39-year-old public servant Zainab Alsalihiy as a candidate in Riverside South-Findlay Creek, the entries has pushed candidate list up over 200 for this fall’s election.

She was the last candidate to file the nomination to run for elections in this fall’s municipal poll.

Likewise, Jacob Solomon has signed up to run for mayor and took the total tally of candidates to 14 for the competition.

City Election officials said that the long list of candidates will lead to print ballots legal-length paper for the first time.

Now, 210 people have registered to run in the October 24 election of which 14 for mayor, 106 for councillors and 90 for school board trustee positions. While, eight candidates for both French-language school boards have been acclaimed.

Meanwhile, it will be the first open mayoral race in decade in which Jim Watson is not contesting for election.

In this election, Ottawa voters for the first time can cast a ballot by mail. Voters will have to apply for a special ballot, which they will be able to between September 1 and 16 once the voters’ list is finalized by the city election office.

Ottawa: The latest provincial and territorial data indicate that over 81% of the total population are now fully vaccinated in the Canada.

Age-specific vaccine coverage data, as of March 20, 2022, show that over 88% of people 12 years or older have at least one dose and over 84% are fully vaccinated, while among children aged 5-11 years of age, 57% have at least one dose, data revealed.

All told, over 5.2 million eligible Canadians need one or more doses to complete their primary series and many others are eligible to get a booster dose to help improve protection that may have decreased since their second dose and to provide even better protection against severe illness from Omicron. While severe illness trends continue to decline nationally, there is regional variability.

The latest provincial and territorial data shows that the average number of people with COVID-19 being treated in hospitals each day during the most recent 7-day period (Mar 18-24, 2022), was 7.4% lower than last week. During the same time period, the number of people who were being treated in intensive care units (ICU) daily decreased by 15.3% compared to the prior week, and an average of 34 deaths were reported daily (Mar 18-24, 2022).

VANCOUVER – January 8th, 2022

With today’s Vancouver Canucks game being postponed in Ottawa against the Senators due to capacity limits, the Canucks embark on a 5-game road trip starting on January 11th next Tuesday in Florida against the Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning. Then go to Carolina to play the Hurricanes and next to Washington against the Capitals and end the trip in Nashville against the Predators. The Canucks last game was on Saturday on January 1st and when they play in Florida it will be a total of 10 days between games. Needless to say, the Canucks will be game hungry and ready to extend their regulation win streak, but it won’t be easy as all the teams there facing are in playoff contention.

In some negative Canucks news, the Canucks announced superstar center Elias Pettersson has been placed into the Covid 19 protocol list along with forward Alex Chiasson. They join forwards Jason Dickinson, Justin Dowling, Brock Boeser and Phillip Di Giuseppe.

Boeser and Dickinson might be able to return sooner to the team then the others because both players tested positive in the USA and stayed there to quarantine and the rules there are less strict then here in Canada.

Ottawa: National advisory of Canada has recommended taking third Covid-19 vaccines to certain immunocompromised individuals on Friday. But the body has not reached to a decision whether to provide additional vaccine shots to the broader population.

The new recommendations released by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) on Friday state that stipulate that moderately to severely immunocompromised Canadians should be vaccinated with a primary series of three doses of an authorized mRNA-based vaccine, which includes those from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, a CBC media report said.

“For those who’ve already had a two-dose series, NACI recommends providing a third dose, ideally of an mRNA vaccine — but the committee stressed this should not be considered a “booster,” the report added.

Ottawa: In the French-language debate held on Wednesday, Conservative Party leader Erin O’Toole attacked incumbent PM Justin Trudeau for his government’s foreign policies.
O’Toole is currently leading in surveys and during the debate he said that he will impose sanctions upon Chinese officials complicit in human rights violations in the Xinjiang province, after forming the government in Canada.
Trudeau came under attack from opposition leaders over calling an election on August 15, two years ahead from its schedule, just as the crisis in Kabul was developing.
O’Toole said that Canadian veterans had asked the government several months ago that an action plan for evacuation of interpreters and other Afghans who had worked with Canadian units is required, however, Trudeau ignored it and called an election.
New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh said also attacked him over his alleged poor foreign policies.
