New Delhi: The central government has opposed the demand to legalize gay marriage. In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the Centre has said that doing so would be against India’s social beliefs and family system.
There will also be many legal hurdles. On January 6 this year, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre on the issue of same-sex marriage. Also, the petitions pending in different high courts were transferred to them.
The Centre has filed a reply to all the 15 petitions ahead of the supreme court hearing on Monday. The Union Law Ministry has said that the concept of family in India is husband and wife and children of both of them.
Gay marriage is against this social perception. Marriage laws passed by Parliament and traditions of different religions do not accept such marriages, the government said.
