Ontario: Interim Conservative leader Candice Bergen has made it clear that she will not run in the next federal elections. But she has also said that she will continue as MP after being elected as the new leader of the party this weekend.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Bergen said it has been a matter of great pride for her to serve the residents of Portage-Lisgar constituency for 14 years.
She got the opportunity to be their voice in the House of Commons so she is very grateful to everyone. She also said that after September 10, she will support whoever is elected by the party.
Bergen said that she has a very positive attitude about the Conservative Movement in Canada and hopes for the victory of the Conservatives.
Bergen, who served as interim leader after Erin O’Toole stepped down as Conservative leader this year, was the first Deputy Leader of the Conservatives and was one of the party’s key figures in the House of Commons. This MP from Manitoba was elected for the first time from the Portage-Lisgar area.
In her statement, Bergen also thanked former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and former interim leader Rona Ambrose. Pertinently, the Conservative Party will elect its new leader in the session to be held in Ottawa on Saturday night.
