Controversy over Savarkar poster: curfew imposed in Karnataka’s Shivamogga, schools closed today

New Delhi: Tensions flared up in Karnataka’s Shivamogga after a youth was stabbed in the Gandhi Bazar area, over the poster controversy of Savarkar and Tipu Sultan on Independence Day.

He was admitted to the hospital in an injured condition.

Due to deteriorating law and order situation, the administration has imposed curfew in the city till August 18. All schools and colleges in the city will remain closed today.

Police rushed to the spot after a video of some Tipu Sultan Sena men uprooting Savarkar’s poster from a pole at Amir Ahmed Circle in the city surfaced. The police chased away the people and used batons to disperse the crowd.

It is being said that people associated with Hindutva organizations had put up a poster of Savarkar there, but after some time some Muslim youths reached there with the flag of Tipu Sultan Army and tried to remove the picture.
