Allahabad: Showing concern over rising Covid-19 cases of new Omicron variant in the country, the Allahabad High Court has urged the Election Commission to postpone the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections by a month or two.
The court also requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban election-related gatherings in the state or consider postponing it to contain the virus spread of highly dangerous and contagious Covid variant Omicron.
The court made the observation while hearing an unconnected bail petition.
“If rallies are not stopped, results will be worse than the second wave,” Justice Shekhar Yadav said, adding that, “Jaan hai toh Jahaan hai (if there is life, we have the world).”
The court observed while quoting a news report that there is a possibility of imminent third wave of coronavirus in the country as the cases are rising.
Uttar Pradesh’s elections plays a vital role in this democratic country as it also has the most number of Lok Sabha seats that play a crucial role in general elections in forming government at centre. The elections is scheduled to be held in first quarter of the next year and many senior politicans including PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leader Rahuld Gandhi and others are keenly planning to hold massive rallies ahead of the polls.
