Toronto: An elderly Sikh man with family in B.C. was attacked in an apparent hate crime while visiting the city over the weekend and the New York Police Department (NYPD) is investigating after the incident.

Victim Nirmal Singh, 70, had been walking down 95 Avenue near Lefferts Boulevard in the South Richmond Hill area of Queens around 6:45 a.m. on Sunday when the incident occurred, police said.

His family members, meanwhile, are concerned and deeply shocked over the incident. They sought intervention of Canada and local authorities for prompt action into the case.

Expressing shock over the incident Canadian minister Harjit Sajjan said, “Since silence benefits the oppressor, all of us must stand up against acts of hate and show that it is not acceptable. I hope that Nirmal and his family are doing better after this horrific attack. My thoughts are with you.”
