Ottawa: Canada’s former interim leader of the Conservative Party, Candice Bergen, has resigned from parliament.
In her announcement posted on Twitter, Bergen said she had resigned on Wednesday. She thanked the residents of her constituency, porters and family members for completing 14 years of journey as MP.
She said she was resigning not because she was tired or out of politics, but because she felt very hopeful and energetic on the contrary.
Bergen said she sees the future of the United Conservative Party under the able leadership of Pierre Poilievre to be very bright.
She had earlier said that she would not stand in the next federal elections. She has been representing Portage—Lisgar, Manitoba’s constituency, since 2008.
In February 2022, Bergen had the opportunity to play the role of interim leader of the Conservatives. Earlier, Bergen was a cabinet minister in Stephen Harper’s government and served as the leader of the opposition under the leadership of then interim party leader Rona Ambrose.
