Former Jalandhar Mayor Sunil Jyoti passes away

Jalandhar: Senior BJP leader and former Mayor of Jalandhar city Sunil Jyoti passed away today. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Jalandhar.

His condition deteriorated during the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections. He was undergoing treatment since then.

During the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections, the BJP high command had entrusted him with the responsibility of the charge of Fatehpur assembly constituency of Kangra district.

During this time, due to heart problem in Fatehpur, his health suddenly deteriorated. After first aid in Fatehpur, he was admitted to a private hospital in Jalandhar. Even after treatment, he could not recover from the disease. He passed away today.

Sunil Jyoti was close to former MLA KD Bhandari. Bhandari was the one who had lobbied to make Jyoti the mayor. He won the mayor’s post, leaving behind councillor Ravi Mahendru, backed by BJP stalwart Manoranjan Kalia. Sunil Jyoti became the Mayor of Jalandhar in 2012.

Then Sunil Jyoti reached the Municipal Corporation House after winning from ward number-5 of the city. At that time, there was an alliance of BJP and Akali Dal Badal in the state.

Kamaljit Singh Bhatia of Akali Dal was made senior deputy mayor. Sunil Jyoti had successfully completed his 5-year tenure.
