Washington: Indian-origin Judge Shama Hakim Mesiwala has been unanimously appointed as associate judge of appeals by the District Court of California in the US state of California.
According to a press release issued by the Judicial Council of California, Mesiwala’s appointment as associate judge of the Third District Court of Appeal in sacramento, California, was confirmed on February 14 by Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero of the Supreme Court of California.
“Judge Mesiwala was confirmed unanimously by a three-member commission, which also included Chief Justice Guerrero (chairman),” the statement said. The commission also included Attorney General Rob Bonta and Acting Chief Justice Ronald B.
Mesiwala, around 50 years old, is filling the void left by the retirement of Justice Coleman A. Blaise.
She has served as a judge of the Sacramento County Superior Court since 2017 and was commissioner there in 2017. Mesiwala has been an assistant professor at the University of California, Davis School of Law since 2013.
She also served as a judicial attorney in the Third District Court of Appeals from 2004 to 2017. She also served as a staff attorney in the Central California Appellate Program from 1999 to 2004, and as an attorney in the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of California in 1999.
She holds a juris doctor degree from the University of California, Davis School of Law.
