Washington: The US Senate (Upper House) has confirmed the appointment of Indian-American lawyer Rupali Desai for the Ninth Circuit in the US Court of Appeals.

She has become the first judge of South Asian descent to be appointed as a judge in this court. Desai received 67 votes in favour and 29 against her in the Senate on Thursday.

The Ninth Circuit is headquartered in San Francisco, California. It is the largest of the 13 appellate courts in the country. Dick Durbin, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Desai would make a significant contribution to the Ninth Circuit.
