Tokyo: Japan will not send a government delegation to February’s Winter Olympics in Beijing, as it called on China to respect human rights and the rule of law.

Tokyo’s decision follows a U.S.-led diplomatic boycott of the Games over concerns about human rights in China, although Japan has avoided explicitly labeling its move as such.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said at a regular news conference that “we have no plans to send a government delegation.”
