Jasmeet Kaur Bains becomes first Sikh woman to be elected to California Assembly

California: Bakersfield doctor Jasmeet Kaur Bains has become the first Sikh woman of Indian origin to be elected to the California Assembly. Bains defeated his opponent Leticia Perez in the Democrat versus Democrat race for the 35th Assembly District in Kern County.

According to the election results, Bains secured 10,827 (58.9 per cent) votes and Perez got 7,555 (41.1 per cent) votes. Bains is the medical director at Bakersfield Recovery Services.

During her election campaign, she had raised issues such as healthcare, housing the homeless, water-related infrastructure and improving air quality. During this time she said that she is excited about the victory. She thanked the voters and said that she wants the right law to be made in the country and that is why she has come into politics with the medical profession.

She has also been involved in the work of auto mechanic and car dealership with her father before becoming a doctor.

She has been honored with the 2010 Hero of Family Medicine by the California Academy of Family Physicians and the 2021 Beautiful Bakersfield Award from the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce.
