Ottawa: Former Governor General David Johnston has been appointed by Prime minister Justin Trudeau as an expert on foreign interference in elections. The announcement in this regard was made by Trudeau on Wednesday.
Johnston has been asked to investigate the matter in connection with allegations of foreign interference in Canada’s last two federal elections. The Liberal government is also saying that they will accept what Johnston recommends on what they can do next on this issue. This could also include a public inquiry which was being demanded by opposition parties for the past few weeks.
Johnston may also recommend a more independent assessment into the issue.
In a written statement issued on Wednesday, Trudeau said the decision was made in consultation with all parties in the House of Commons. “We want Canadians to have faith in our electoral system and our democracy. “Johnston will bring with him integrity, a bundle of experience and skill,” he said.
