Chandigarh: The Punjab Police lathicharged the mazdoor union members who were marching towards Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence in Sangrur on Wednesday. The workers were on their way to the chief minister’s residence to press for their various demands. The workers were mainly demanding a hike in wages.
The protesting workers and members of trade unions clashed with the police. The police then resorted to lathicharge to control the crowd, officials said.
Dramatic scenes at the scene showed police stopping protesters waving flags and shouting slogans. In Punjab, farmers of Sanjha Mazdoor Morcha today staged a protest outside Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence in Sangrur. They were demanding an increase in the minimum daily wage to Rs 700. The protesters were demanding an increase in the minimum daily wages of agricultural labourers under MGNREGA.
During this protest, the police lathi-charged the workers and dispersed them.
The already announced protest began this morning. The protesters, who had gathered at Patiala bypass, started marching towards the chief minister’s residence. The police then used force to stop them.
Earlier, these agricultural labourers had protested for 19 days in October. The workers had agreed to call off the farmers’ agitation after the government accepted their demands in writing.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is campaigning for Aam Aadmi Party candidates for the assembly elections in Gujarat. Heavy police force has been deployed outside Chief Minister Mann’s Sangrur residence.
