Chandigarh: The Congress has fielded Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary, wife of former MP late Santokh Singh Chaudhary, as its candidate for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat in Punjab. Santokh Singh Chaudhary died on January 14 this year. Chaudhary suffered a heart attack during the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra in Phillaur.

The Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat has been vacant since Chaudhary’s death, however, the Election Commission has not yet announced the date of the by-election since his death.

Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Sunday appointed Rana Gurjit Singh, the party MLA from Kapurthala, as the chairman of the campaign committee for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypolls.

The party had recently named several leaders and former MLAs as in-charges and co-incharges for nine assembly segments of Jalandhar parliamentary constituency – Phillaur, Nakodar, Shahkot, Kartarpur, Jalandhar (West), Jalandhar (Central), Jalandhar (North), Jalandhar (Cantt) and Adampur.
