Michelle O’Bonsawin is Canada’s new Supreme Court justice

Ottawa: Justice Michelle O’Bonsawin will be the Canada’s first Indigenous Supreme Court as the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has formal gave permission for her appointment to the top court today.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced the appointment of the O’Bonsawin to the Supreme Court of Canada, effective September 1.

The appointment is the fifth under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government. O’Bonsawin is filling the seat left vacant by the upcoming retirement of Justice Michael J. Moldaver.

She is a Canadian judge, who had served as a justice on the Ontario Superior Court of Justice since 2017. On August 19, 2022, PM Trudeau nominated her to the Supreme Court of Canada to replace retiring Justice Michael Moldaver. She will now be the first Indigenous Canadian to sit on the country’s highest court.
