Ontario: The Ontario government on Tuesday announced new changes regarding housing. This will change the municipal zoning law in some cases and allow people to build up to three units on a residential plot.

The draft of the new law in this regard was made public at an event of the Toronto Region Board of Trade. Premier Doug Ford and Municipal Affairs Minister Steve Clark were also present at the event.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Ford said that the third installment of his government’s Housing Action Plan will introduce new solutions that will allow the next generation of Ontarions to fulfill their dream of building their own home.

“We don’t have time to waste,” he said. The previous governments were aware of this problem but they didn’t address it.

“You also need to have a backbone to make such difficult decisions,” Ford said. Our government has never ignored the desire of Ontario families to have their own home.”

The government on Tuesday introduced a bill called More Homes, Built Faster Act. In this bill, the government said that with some legislative changes and proposals, the construction of houses will be expedited and the prices associated with the housing sector will come down.

Under this law, three units can be built on a single residential plot and for this, there will be no need to amend any kind of bylaw nor municipal permissions are required. The example presented by the government shows a basement apartment and a garden or a laneway house that can be built on a single plot and these can also be rented out to the next tenants.

Duplexes and triplex can also be built on a single residential plot. These units will be exempt from development charges and Parkland dedication fees.
