Chandigarh: A mob had damaged government property and injured many security forces five years ago over conviction of chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by a special CBI court in Panchkula for raping two women followers of the dera.
During the protest, offices, homes, hotels and shops were vandalized, vehicles were set on fire and after the story of that chaos, neither any victim has received any compensation nor any accused has been punished so far.
Even the media persons were not spared in those riots that broke out by the followers of the Dera chief.
More than 35 people were killed in police firing amid the Panchkula riots but not a single person has been convicted till date.
More than 100 cases have been registered in connection with the riots, out of which the verdict has come after hearing 14 cases and all the accused have been acquitted.
In response to the riots, a bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court had taken strong note of the events of August 25, 2017 and asked the administration and the police as to why these large gatherings were allowed despite the orders and sought a response. So far, there is clearly no response from the civil and police administration in this regard.
