Kabul: In the latest attack on women’s freedom in Afghanistan, the Taliban government today banned them from working in local and foreign non-governmental organisations (NGOs). All NGOs have also been ordered not to recruit women employees.
The order was issued by Finance Minister Qari Din Mohammad Haneef. If an NGO does not comply with the order, its licence in Afghanistan will be cancelled, it said.
Ministry spokesman Abdul Rahman Habib confirmed the order and said, “The government has received serious complaints about women employees working for NGOs who do not wear hijab properly.”
However, it was not clear whether the order would apply only to Afghan women working in NGOs or whether all women would come under its purview.
The latest decision by the Taliban government in Afghanistan to ban women from going to universities has also been condemned by many countries. Afghan women have been protesting in major cities against the ban.
