Ottawa: US President Joe Biden arrived in Canada on Thursday evening with his wife and delegation. During the 27-hour visit, issues such as Canada-US relations, protectionism and migration to both sides of the border are expected to be discussed.
Biden and his wife Jill Biden were received by Treasury Secretary Chrystia Freeland, Secretary of State Melanie Jolie, US Ambassador to Canada David Cohen and Canadian Ambassador to the US Kirsten Hillman.
Biden first began his trip by meeting Governor General Mary Simon. On Thursday evening, Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, will spend time with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau at their residence in Redu Cottage.
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders since 2009 is actually now going to take place in Canada. Kirby said that in his first year in office, Biden’s focus was on improving Canada-US relations.
They are now working on the issue of safe migration through regular routes. Moving towards the third year and keeping this visit in mind, we will predict what we have done, where we have reached and what our priorities will be in the future.
The two leaders are also likely to hold detailed talks on the issue of Haiti. On the other hand, the conflict waged by Russia against Ukraine and the issues raised by China are also likely to be discussed mainly during this visit.
