Setback to AAP, Simranjit Singh Mann wins Sangrur by election

Sangrur: Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) candidate Simranjit Singh Mann won the Sangrur by-election after 23 years. He had won from this constituency in 1999.

It is a major embarrassment for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party as its candidate Gurmail Singh remained on second position despite the fact Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal himself campaigned for him aggressively.

It was a direct contest between Mann and AAP’s Gurmail while other candidates were even not in the competition to win this poll throughout the counting. It is also a huge disappointment for Akali Dal, whose candidate SAD fielded Kamaldeep Kaur, sister of Balwant Singh Rajoana, lost with huge margin.

After winning the seat, Mann said, “I am grateful to our voters of Sangrur for having elected me as your representative in parliament. I will work hard to ameliorate the sufferings of our farmers, farm-labour, traders and everyone in my constituency.”
