Gangtok: Sixteen soldiers were killed and four others injured when a military truck fell into a gorge near the India-China border in north Sikkim today, police said.
According to the information received, a convoy of three trucks was going and one truck fell into the ditch. According to the police, the injured have been airlifted to the Army Hospital in North Bengal. The accident took place around 8 am, 130 km from the state capital Gangtok.
The army vehicle was on its way to the border outposts with 20 personne but overturned at a turn and fell into a deep gorge.
All 16 bodies have been recovered from the accident site. The bodies are being taken to the government-run STNM hospital in Gangtok for postmortem and will be handed over to the Army. He said the regiment of the deceased could not be traced.
