Colombo: Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has signed his resignation. The President has signed the resignation and handed it over to a senior official who will further hand it over to the Speaker. Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abewardana has been apprised of the letter.
Now the President’s rule of Gotabaya has come to an end. Earlier there was speculation that Rajapaksa had left Sri Lanka but sources later refuted the reports saying that Rajapaksa was still in the country and armed forces were guarding him. Even before the july 9 riots in the country, Rajapaksa was evacuated from the President’s residence by security forces and taken on a naval fleet.
