Standalone bill introduced in US House for CAATSA waiver to India

Washington: Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna has introduced a bill in the US House of Representatives demanding that India not impose sanctions under the CAATS Act.

He argued that granting exemption to India would be in the interest of both the countries and it was necessary to keep the “invaders” at bay in view of the close relations between China and Russia. Under this act, the US imposes sanctions on countries that take large arms and defense equipment from Russia.

The US had brought this law against Russia after the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Ro Khanna’s resolution was endorsed by Congressmen Brad Sherman and David Schweickert.

It has now been referred to the House Foreign Affairs Committee for further action. Khanna said that he has introduced the bill personally and its purpose is to garner support.

He said the strengthening of India-US ties is essential to meet china’s challenges, and the bill is important for the relationship between the two countries. It is worth mentioning that India has purchased the S-400 missile defense system from Russia and its import has started.
