Ontario: Ontario’s 55,000 education workers and the government have averted the threat of a strike and Ontario schools will reopen as usual from today.
After the deadline of 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (COUPE) announced that their deal with the provincial government had come to an end and that its members had no intention of going on strike.
Most school boards in Ontario said they would suspend in-person learning if education support staff went on strike.
Five days ago, the union had announced that they would not hesitate to go on strike if a deal with the province did not materialise. The two sides had been in talks for the last 171 days.
Laura Walton, president of the Ontario School Board Council of Unions in Coupe, said workers will be at the school from morning and there will be no strike.
