New Delhi: The Central Government on clarified that no Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the premises of religious or charitable trusts has been levied by thr government.

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs has made this claim in a series of tweets. The board said that the illusion has spread due to wrong reports from some sections of the media.

In the series of tweet, CBIC clarified that Certain sections of the media and social media are spreading the message that GST has recently been imposed with effect from 18 July, 2022 even on ‘Sarais’ run by religious/charitable trusts. This is not true.

“Based on the recommendations of the 47th GST Council meeting, GST exemption on hotel rooms having room rent upto Rs. 1000 per day has been withdrawn. They are now taxed at 12%,” it said adding that the three Sarais managed by SGPC in Amritsar have started paying GST with effect from 18.7.2022. These three Sarais are:

1. Guru Gobind Singh NRI Niwas

2. Baba Deep Singh Niwas

3. Mata Bhag Kaur Niwas.

Therefore, in this regard it is to clarify that no notice has been issued to any of these Sarais. These Sarais may have on their own opted to pay GST.

Chandigarh: The Centre government has levelled 12% GST on Golden Temple ‘serais’ (inns) managed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and devotes would now have to pay more on the accommodation.

Describing the decision of the Government of India to levy GST on the Sarais in the vicinity of Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar as an arbitrary and irrational decision, the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday demanded that it should rolled back.

In a statement issued here today, the Chief Minister condemned the decision of the Union government to levy the GST on the sarais of Golden Temple. He said that the sarais including Guru Gobind Singh NRI Niwas, Baba Deep Singh Niwas and Mata Bhag Kaur Niwas are associated with the Golden Temple. Bhagwant Mann said that these Sarais are meant for the accommodation of the devotees visiting the holy shrine and have always been an integral part of the gurdwara complex.

The Chief Minister said that since decades these sarais have been providing comfortable stay to the Sangat arriving at Sri Darbar Sahib on no profit basis. He said that the levying of GST on room charges of these three sarais will lead to higher tariffs thereby putting a huge burden on the pocket the pilgrims who come at Sri Darbar sahib for paying obeisance from across the globe. Bhagwant Mann unequivocally said that the Sarais at the Sri Darbar Sahib complex are non commercial entities and have been constructed for the convenience of thousands of pilgrims coming daily at this holy shrine.
