Ahmedabad: Gujarat Police on Friday opposed the bail plea of social activist Teesta Setalvad, saying he was involved in a larger conspiracy to topple the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state.

An affidavit filed in the sessions court on behalf of the Special Investigation Team of the Gujarat Police claimed that Setalvad was involved in a larger conspiracy at the behest of late Congress leader Ahmed Patel to topple the BJP government in the state after the 2002 riots.

Additional Sessions Judge D D Thakkar took on record the reply of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and adjourned the hearing on the bail application till Monday.

Setalvad has been arrested along with former Indian Police Service (IPS) officers R B Sreekumar and Sanjiv Bhatt on charges of fabricating evidence to implicate innocent people in the Gujarat riots cases.

Godhra (Gujarat): A Godhra court has sentenced an accused in the 2002 Godhra train carnage to life imprisonment.

In this attack, 59 kar sevaks were killed. The court of additional sessions judge at Godhra in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district on Saturday sentenced the accused Rafiq Bhatuk to life imprisonment.

Bhatuk was arrested in February 2021.

New Delhi: The Ahmedabad Crime Branch today arrested social activist Teesta Setalvad after being detained from Mumbai yesterday. She was produced before the court from where he was remanded in police custody till July 2.

Setalvad was detained from Mumbai yesterday after registering a fresh case of obstructing legal proceedings by falsely alleging forgery, criminal conspiracy and assault.

DCP (crime) Chaitanya Mandlik said that Crime Branch arrested former Gujarat DGP Sreekumar and they are trying to secure a transfer warrant to take former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt into custody. He said the Crime Branch was procuring documents submitted by Setalvad, Sreekumar and Bhat to the Commission of Inquiry, SIT and court.

Mandvik said, “The case is under investigation and they are getting the documents submitted by the accused to the Commission of Inquiry, the SIT and various courts.

He said the investigating officers believe that more people are also involved in this criminal conspiracy and the case is being investigated from the same angle. He said none of Srikumar and Setalvad were cooperating with the investigation.

Setalvad was handed over to the city crime branch early this morning after being brought here following which his arrest has been made, a crime branch source said. It may be recalled that he was brought to The Santacruz police station in Mumbai to inform the local police about Setalvad’s custody after he was taken into custody yesterday. From there a team of Gujarat Police brought them to Ahmedabad.

The action against Setalvad comes a day after the Supreme Court dismissed a petition challenging the clean chit given by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to former Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and others in the 2002 Godhra riots case. Setalvad and her NGO Zakia Jafri were the assistant petitioners in the petition filed against Modi and others in the Supreme Court. Two former IPS officers RB Sreekumar and Sanjiv Bhatt were also charged in the FIR on the basis of which Setalvad was detained yesterday.

New Delhi: Zakia Jafri’s petition in the 2002 Gujarat riots case has been dismissed by the Supreme Court here today.

Zakia had challenged the closure report of the SIT, which had exonerated 64 people including then CM Narendra Modi from the charge of conspiracy to riot.

Earlier, the magistrate in 2012 and the high court in 2017 had approved the report. The Supreme Court has also ruled on the case, saying that there are no facts in the petition while dismissing the plea of Zakia.

The Supreme Court had constituted the SIT under the leadership of former CBI director R K Raghavan to probe the riots in 2008. The court was constantly monitoring the investigation.

Zakia, wife of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was killed in the riots, alleged that the then CM Narendra Modi was also involved in the conspiracy of the riots. In 2011, the Supreme Court ordered the SIT to investigate the case on the basis of evidence provided by Zakia.
