Ottawa: With the last minute nomination filed by 39-year-old public servant Zainab Alsalihiy as a candidate in Riverside South-Findlay Creek, the entries has pushed candidate list up over 200 for this fall’s election.

She was the last candidate to file the nomination to run for elections in this fall’s municipal poll.

Likewise, Jacob Solomon has signed up to run for mayor and took the total tally of candidates to 14 for the competition.

City Election officials said that the long list of candidates will lead to print ballots legal-length paper for the first time.

Now, 210 people have registered to run in the October 24 election of which 14 for mayor, 106 for councillors and 90 for school board trustee positions. While, eight candidates for both French-language school boards have been acclaimed.

Meanwhile, it will be the first open mayoral race in decade in which Jim Watson is not contesting for election.

In this election, Ottawa voters for the first time can cast a ballot by mail. Voters will have to apply for a special ballot, which they will be able to between September 1 and 16 once the voters’ list is finalized by the city election office.

British Columbia: Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall has announced that he is not seeking a re-election this fall. He made this announcement at a regular council meeting.

“Today is bittersweet. There is no doubt that it was one of the most difficult decisions that I have ever had to make,” Hall said in his voice choked up with emotion before council chambers.

Apart from Hall, other multi-term B.C. mayors including New Westminster’s Jonathan Coté, Abbotsford’s Henry Braun, Kamloops’ Ken Christian and Fort St. John’s Lori Ackerman have also announced earlier that they will not be running in municipal elections on October 15.

In his over two-decade long political career, Hall was the Prince George school board before joining city council for a single term in 2011. He later got elected mayor in 2014, and won re-election in 2018.

Hall’s term has been marked by new developments including development of major hotels and housing throughout the city due to rise in the population. Some controversies have marred these efforts as well including an independent review of how he managed funds for a major condo and parkade built adjacent to city hall ballooned with little oversight.

Surrey: BC Green Party has named, a SFU student and climate advocate Simran Sarai, its candidate for Surrey South byelection. She is third candidate announced for September 10 polls.

Simran Sarai is a Political Science and Environmental Management student at Simon Fraser University. She has served as a spokesperson for BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society, and as a presenter at Radio-Canada (CBC French).

“Running as a candidate is not a decision I take lightly, but there’s too much at stake to not use this opportunity to advocate for marginalized individuals and communities. My generation is set to bear the brunt of the rapidly unfolding climate crisis, while the BC NDP and Liberal governments refuse to stop the subsidization of fossil fuels and expansion of unsustainable resource-extraction projects,” she said in her campaign statement.

For the Surrey South byelection, two other candidates including Elenore Sturko for the BC Liberals and Pauline Greaves for the BC NDP are also in the contest for this seat.

Ontario: On International Youth Day, the Body Shop Canada is partnering with the non-partisan, national non-profit Apathy is Boring (AisB) and taking initiative to encourage the youngsters to exercise their right of vote in this year’s municipal elections and beyond.

Starting today, visitors to The Body Shop’s Canadian stores and website are being informed about importance of voting and pledge to vote in this year’s municipal elections.

This effort is an extension of Be Seen. Be Heard, the global campaign from this body shop and the United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy.

The campaign Be Seen Be Heard: Understanding young people’s political participation has been launched at the UN headquarters in May, considering low turnout for the Ontario provincial election.

The campaign pours light on vital appetite for sweeping political change among youngsters in Canada and across the globe.

According to the report, 80 percent of Canadians youth said that they think political systems need drastic reforms while 77 percent belive that they can make positive changes in the world but don’t know where to start.

Ottawa: In a historical move, the New Brunswick Liberal Party has selected its new leader Susan Holt after she won poll a margin of third ballot with 51.67 per cent of the vote against Former Liberal MP T.J. Harvey.

She has become the first ever female to win the party’s leadership in the province.

She will now lead the party into the next election against the governing Progressive Conservatives now led by Premier Blaine Higgs.

Calling her victory a ‘Bold Change’, Holt said, “I am humbled to have earned your trust to lead the Liberal Party of New Brunswick. I’ve been loud and clear that I want to change the way we do politics. And I’m so grateful that you do too.”

She said that this campaign—and the last few months of travelling around the province—have affected me deeply. I love this province more than ever. I feel connected to our communities more than ever. I more proud of our people than ever before.

In New Brunswick, regardless of language, color, place of origin, we are friends and neighbours.

“I’m proud that our campaign brought people back into the Liberal fold. I’m proud that we’ve attracted new and enthusiastic members. The work doesn’t stop now. I’ll continue to reach out to people and meet them on their terms. With authenticity, an open heart, and curious mind, “she said.

Ottawa: Even only two weeks have left to submit a nomination, over a quarter of Toronto’s municipal wards don’t have any challengers in the forthcoming election.

According to the data, over a dozen candidates have signed up to run for mayor but seven out of 25 wards have only one candidate in the fray so far during the three-month nomination period.

Registration for candidates opened on May 2 and will close on August 19 at 2 pm.

The Ontario Municipal Elections Act states that if a candidate is running in a ward without a challenger, he/she will be declared winner immediately after nomination close.

Professor emeritus at Toronto Metropolitan University Myer Siemiatycki said that it is a sorry state of affairs for Toronto. When people don’t participate, democracy doesn’t work well and that’s what we are looking at now.

Michael Thompson Longtime Scarborough Centre councillor said, I am stunned to find himself unopposed this late. I am happy to have competition.”

Incumbent Stephen Holyday of Etobicoke Centre is the only candidate.

He said that the city has almost three million population with 25 council seats and it is unrealistic to think to get elected unopposed, said Holyday.

Similarly, the Don Mills Residents Inc. president Stephen Ksiazek is also hoping to fill the Don Valley East seat.

Meanwhile, incumbent councillors Shelley Carroll, Paul Ainslie, Brad Bradford and Paula Fletcher are also running unchallenged so far from Beaches-East York, Scarborough-Guildwood, Toronto-Danforth and in Don Valley North.
