Washington: More than a year after Kabul’s government fell to the Taliban, US President Joe Biden has revoked Afghanistan’s status as a major non-NATO ally.

In 2012, the US granted this status to Afghanistan through which the defense and economic relations between the two countries were maintained.

According to the US State Department, the US now has 18 major non-NATO cooperation.

New Delhi: In Afghanistan, about 250 people have been reported to were killed in the aftershock of Wednesday’s earthquake. Afghanistan’s state-run news agency says at least 255 people have been killed in an earthquake in the country’s eastern Paktika province.

The state-run news agency reported the death toll on Wednesday and said rescue teams were arriving by helicopter. There was a magnitude 6 earthquake in Paktika province.

Officials said the death toll could be more than 250, while more than 150 people were injured. The quake struck about 44 kilometers from the south-eastern city of Khost. Reuters cited the European Mediterranean Sismological Centre as saying that the tremors were felt in Pakistan, 500 kilometres away, as far as Pakistan and India.

In a tweet, government spokesman Bilal Karimi said: “Unfortunately, hundreds of people in the country have been killed and injured in a strong earthquake in four districts of Paktika province last night. At the same time, dozens of houses were damaged. “We appeal to the aiding agencies to immediately send teams to rescue people.

New Delhi: A deadly explosion occurred at a Sufi mosque in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul in which reportedly killed at least 10 people and injured up to 15 more, many of them seriously.

The blast at the Khalifa Sahib mosque, located in the Darulaman area in the west of the city, is the latest in a series of attacks on civilian targets in the capital and provinces.

The United Nations has condemned the incident and said, “No words are strong enough to condemn this despicable act, targeting a place of worship, as Muslims across Afghanistan prepare to celebrate Eid,” says @UN deputy envoy for #Afghanistan @Metknu, appalled by today’s deadly attack on a mosque in #Kabul.

Ottawa: The Canadian government planning to resettle at least 40,000 Afghan nationals, has now welcomed a total of 12,160 Afghan refugees till today while the government is putting efforts for more arriving every week.”

Canada has now welcomed 12,160 Afghan Refugees. This #NationalVolunteerWeek, I want to thank those who have given their time to help new arrivals settle into their communities,” said Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

He further said that Groups across Canada like AfghanCala are raising money to supply airfare, medication and basic necessities to newcomers.

“Books Over Borders has donated over 1,500 books to Afghan children across the country. These are just a few examples of how Canadians and communities are getting involved to help some of the world’s most vulnerable,”he tweeted.

Karachi: Authorities in Afghanistan confirmed that Pakistan conducted an airstrike in the Khost province of Afghanistan, which led to deaths of 30 people including children and women.

Pakistani planes targeted areas in the Spurra district of Khost province, media reports said adding that Mirpar, Mandeh, Shaidi and Kai in the Spura district of Khost province were targeted by at least 26 villages of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Taliban has now summoned Pakistan ambassador over the incident.

Ottawa: Canada marked an important milestone by welcoming over 10,000 Afghan refugees since August 2021. The latest newcomers arrived in Toronto, Ontario, on a charter flight with nearly 300 Afghan nationals.

Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, was in in Toronto to welcome the newcomers and to show Canada’s continued dedication to supporting them and the world’s most vulnerable.

This effort is the result of an ongoing collaboration between the Government of Canada and international partners, as we work tirelessly to facilitate the safe passage of Afghan refugees.

“We have worked tirelessly to welcome over 10,000 Afghan refugees in Canada. Despite extraordinary and complex challenges that we are facing on the ground in Afghanistan, the pace of arrivals continues to be strong and we’ll keep working with our trusted domestic and international partners as we resettle more Afghan refugees safely in Canada. New Delhi: In response to appeals made by the United Nations for humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, Indian government has decided to gift 50,000 MT of wheat to the people of Afghanistan.

The supply will be effected by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and transported from ICP Attari (India) to Jalalabad (Afghanistan) by Afghan transporter.

In a ceremony held at Amritsar today, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla along with Afghan Ambassador Farid Mamundzay and World Food Program Country Director Bishaw Parajuli, flagged off the first convoy of 50 trucks carrying 2500 MT of wheat assistance from India to Afghanistan via Pakistan.

The shipment is part of the commitment made by the Government of India to supply 50,000 MT of wheat for the people of Afghanistan. The wheat assistance will be delivered in multiple consignments and will be handed over to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. In this regard, the Government of India signed an agreement with the WFP for the distribution of 50,000 MT of wheat within Afghanistan.

India remains committed to its special relationship with the people of Afghanistan. In this endeavour, India has already supplied 500,000 doses of COVAXIN, 13 tons of essential lifesaving medicines and 500 units of winter clothing. These consignments were handed over to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Indira Gandhi Hospital, Kabul.

Afghanistan: The newly appointed higher education minister Abdul Baqi Haqqani has said that women will be allowed to study but not with the men.

He also announced to change the curriculums in the education institutes.

In the previous Taliban rule between 1996 and 2001, they had not allowed women to get education in schools or universities.

Though Taliban have said that they will not stop women from being educated but they had not allowed women, except those in the public health sector, to continue their work citing the security situation.

The Taliban has raised their flag over the presidential palace on Sunday, announcing the beginning of their administration.

Afghanistan: A video went viral on the social media in which the Taliban’s newly appointed Minister of Education, Sheikh Molvi Noorullah Munir, questioned the relevance of higher education.
“No Phd degree, master’s degree is valuable today. You see that the Mullahs and Taliban that are in the power, have no Phd, MA or even a high school degree, but are the greatest of all,” Munir is heard saying in the video.
Following this, the video has been widely shared on the social media and it drew a huge criticism across the globe.
A twitter user wrote, “Why is this man talking about education.”
Another said that “His statement indicates that how bright is the future of Afghanistan is going to be.”
Education minster is saying that education is not worth, but a joke, another user wrote on twitter.
The Taliban’s new government will be led by led by Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund, Mullah Mohammad Hassan, the little-known head of the Taliban’s leadership council, has been named as acting Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, UN-designated terrorist Sirajuddin Haqqani has also named as the new acting Interior Minister in the 33-member cabinet that has no woman member.
