Kinshasa: Over 15 people have been killed and 50 others injured in two-day protests against the UN mission in eastern Congo, government officials said.

The United Nations confirmed that a peacekeeper and two international police personnel working with the UN peacekeeping forces in Butembo, North Kivu Province, have been killed and another injured.

They informed that the attackers snatched weapons from Congolese policemen and opened fire on UN personnel. UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haque said reports of civilians being killed and injured, including UN peacekeepers, would be investigated. He said hundreds of attackers on Tuesday re-attacked UN force bases in Goma as well as other parts of North Kivu.

They said hundreds of attackers on Wednesday re-attacked UN force bases in Goma as well as other parts of North Kivu. Congo police said at least six people had died in Goma and eight civilians in Butambo.

Earlier, government spokesman Patrick Muaya said at least five people had been killed and about 50 wounded as of Monday. The protesters attributed the deaths to firing by peacekeepers.
