Canberra: Australia’s government today announced that it will raise its permanent immigration limit from 35,000 to 195,000 in the current fiscal year as the country grapples with a shortage of skills and labour force. Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neill announced the increase for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023, during a two-day conference of 140 representatives from governments, trade unions, businesses and industries to address the shortage of workers caused by the pandemic.

O’Neill said nurses in Australia have been working in two-three shifts for the past two years, flights have been canceled due to a shortage of lower staff and the fruits have been left to rot on trees, because they are not going to be plucked.

Brisbane: As the Australian government’s budget, states and territories here have also opened their skilled visa enrollment programs for 2022-23.

With the steep increase in the number of locations in the skilled designated visa (subclass 190) and ‘regionally sponsored’ (subclass 491) visa categories in most states, it appears that the government wants to increase permanent migration.

In New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia, there has been a good increase in the ‘subclass’ 491 and 190 seats.

The number of visas under the skilled category has increased from 79,600 to 109,900, while the number of seats under the family category has been reduced from 77,300 to 50,000. The federal government is also considering removing the annual limit on housing to meet the severe shortage of skilled workers. Experts believe that this is good news for the permanent residence (PR) of international holders and temporary visa holders.

According to immigration experts, given Australia’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is now a good time for temporary visa holders and outside candidates to take advantage of the nomination opportunities.
