Birmingham: On the 9th day of the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, India was showered with medals. Indian athletes won a total of 14 medals with 4 gold in this one day. With this, India’s total medals have also reached 40. Of these, 13 are gold.

India is currently ranked fifth in the medal tally. Who were the medal winners for India on day 9? Read here..

1. Priyanka Goswami (Silver Medal)

India’s Priyanka won the silver medal in the women’s 10,000 m race walk. He clocked a personal best of 43:38.83 here.

2. Avinash Mukund Sable (Silver Medal)

In the men’s 3000 steeplechase, India’s Avinash Mukund Sable clocked a personal best of 8:11.20 to clinch the silver medal. He becomes first-ever Indian to win CWG steeplechase medal.

3. Men’s lawn bowls competition (Silver Medal)

In the final of the men’s force team of lawn bowls, the Indian team lost 5-18 to Northern Ireland and settled for a silver medal. However, this is the first medal for men in the history of commonwealth games in lawn bowls competition at the Commonwealth Games.

4. Jasmine (Bronze Medal)

In boxing, Indian boxer Jasmine lost 2-3 to England’s Jema Page Richardson in the semi-finals of the women’s lightweight (57-60kg) event, settling for a bronze medal.

5. Pooja Gehlot (Bronze Medal)

In wrestling, Pooja could not make it to the final in the women’s 50kg category, but in the bronze medal match, she defeated Scotland’s Christelle El. She won the bronze medal by a margin of 12-2.

6. Ravi Kumar Dahiya (Gold Medal)

Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya won gold in the men’s 57kg category. He defeated Nigeria’s Abikevenimo Velson 10-0.

7. Vinesh Phogat (Gold Medal)

Vinesh Phogat was the champion in the women’s 53 kg category in wrestling. She won the gold by beating Sri Lanka’s Chamodia Keshani in a few seconds.

8. Naveen Kumar (Gold Medal)

Wrestler Naveen Kumar also won gold for India. He defeated Pakistan’s Mohammad Sharif Tahir 9-0 in the men’s 74 kg weight category in wrestling.

9. Pooja Sihag (Bronze Medal)

Pooja Sihag won bronze in the women’s 76 kg category in wrestling. She could not make it to the final but in the gold medal match, she won bronze by defeating Australia’s Naomi de Bruyne 11-0.

10. Mohammed Hussamuddin (Bronze Medal)

Indian boxer Hussamuddin won bronze in the 57kg category of men’s boxing. He suffered defeat in the semi-final match.

11. Deepak Nehra (Bronze Medal)

In the men’s wrestling 97kg category, Indian wrestler Deepak Nehra defeated Pakistan’s Tayyab Raja 10-2 to win the bronze medal.

12. Sonaben Patel (Bronze Medal)

The 34-year-old Sonaben won bronze in the women’s singles of para table tennis. She defeated England’s Sue Bailey 11-5, 11-2, 11-3.

13. Rohit Tokas (Bronze Medal)

India’s Rohit Tokas lost in the semi-finals of the men’s 67kg welterweight category in boxing. He lost to Zambia’s Stephen Zimba. Here he had to be satisfied with the bronze medal.

14. Bhavina Patel (Gold Medal)

Bhavina Patel won gold in the category in the women’s singles class 3-5 of para table tennis. She defeated Nigeria’s Christiana Ekpayoi 12-10, 11-2, 11-9.

Birmingham: The 22nd Commonwealth Games began here with a spectacular display of Britain’s rich cultural heritage. Indian classical singer and musician Ranjana Ghatak led the programme on the occasion. Meanwhile, 70 cars in red, white and blue colours came together to form the British flag ‘Union Jack’. According to the tradition of the Commonwealth Games, the host of the Games Australia came first last time during the players’ parade.

After that other countries found entry into the stadium. When India, host of the 2010 Games, came in, people welcomed the players with a round of applause. Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh led the Indian contingent.

Birmingham: Olympic medal-winning badminton player PV Sindhu has got a big responsibility. Two-time Olympic medal-winning badminton player PV Sindhu was on Wednesday made the flag bearer of the Indian contingent for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

An Indian Olympic Association (IOA) official told PTI, “PV Sindhu has been made the flag bearer of the Indian team for the opening ceremony.”

PV Sindhu has been given this responsibility for the second time in a row.

The Indian Olympic Association in a statement said, “We are delighted to announce two-time Olympic medal winning shuttler PV Sindhu as the flag bearer of the Indian team at the opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.” The association also said weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and boxer Lovlina Borgohain were also considered after Neeraj Chopra’s injury.
