OTTAWA: With a day left for federal election, leaders of Canada’s main political parties on Sunday organised campaigns for the final day here.

The polls surveys are indicating that the Liberals of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hold an edge in the election and likely to form the government again.

Trudeau, who had called the vote two years ago to gain a majority government, faced stiff attack from opposition for calling elections during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He lost the majority in Parliament in 2019. He first took power in 2015.

Trudeau’s initial healthy lead disappeared as voters were unhappy with the early call. Polls show that neither the Liberals nor their rival right-leaning Conservatives have anywhere near the 38% public support needed for a majority. Therefore, Trudeau might again form a minority government in Canada.

“Now is the time to pick the right direction for our country to keep moving forward or let the Conservative takes us back,” Trudeau said while addressing a crowd of over 200 volunteers in Montreal.

In contrast, Conservative leader Erin O’Toole planned to spend the entire day in parliamentary constituencies near Toronto.

TORONTO: Thousands of eligible voters in Canada won’t be able to cast their vote in the federal election due to COVID-19 pandemic.

As the deadline for mail-in ballot will elapsed at 6pm on Tuesday, those who have diagnosed with coronavirus between now and elections day will not be allowed to vote due to mandatory isolation period extends beyond election day.
If someone has COVID, they should be in quarantine and that would make it impossible for them to show up at a polling place,” a spokesperson for Elections Canada told CTVNews.ca in an email.
As per the Elections Canada’s online FAQ, voters must contact their local public health authority if they develop symptoms for next steps, but “after Tuesday, Sept. 14, electors who have or believe they have COVID-19 and who have not already applied to vote by mail will not be able to vote.”

Ottawa: In this federal election, the number of Canadians expecting to exercise their rights of vote by mail is likely to be far lower than Elections Canada’s initial estimates.

Last month, it was predicted that a massive surge in mail-in ballor requests would be recorded as Canadians looked for alternative voting methods amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, the organization said.

The Elections Canada’s survey revealed that between two and three million people would vote by mail this year, up from about 50, 000 during the 2019 elections.

“Only one day has left for voters to request for special ballot voting kits, which can be submitted by mail. But the authorities have received 985,000 requests from Canadians. Around 52, 000 requests were made by Canadians living outside the country. Special ballots can also be dropped off at Elections Canada offices. They are also used for voting at places such as hospitals and prisons,” the officials informed.
