Ottawa: Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Karina Gould on Thursday introduced the bill Canada Early Learning and Child Care Act also known as Bill C-35 to further strengthen childcare in Canada.

The bill will also determine Ottawa’s long-standing role in the new national daycare system.

The Liberal government will reduce daycare fees by an average of 50 percent and it will be reduced to $ 10 per day by 2026. In a federal budget presented in 2021, the Liberals pledged to spend $30 billion on the national childcare system over the next five years. After this, it was also said to spend $ 9.2 billion annually.

Earlier this year, Gould said the bill would also uphold the principles of a funding agreement signed by provinces and territories with Ottawa. This will also include reduction in parent fees and creation of more space.

Ottawa: National dental care coverage is going to start soon in Canada. The bill to implement the benefit program for children below the age of 12 years has been passed.

Bill C-31, which provides for dental benefits for low-income families, has received royal assent and has now become a law.

The dental benefit is actually the result of an agreement between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh. The government has set December 1 as the date for accepting applications for the programme.

From now on, these benefits will be given to children under the age of 12 whose annual family income is less than $ 90,000.

According to the government, under this benefit, every child will get a benefit of $ 650 every year according to the family’s income. For example

· If the family’s annual income is less than $70,000, each child in the family will receive $650

· If the family’s income is between $70,000 and $79,000, each child in the family will get $390.

If the family’s annual income is less than $70,000, each child in the family will receive $650

Ottawa: Ontario’s paediatric intensive care units are above the capacity while general hospitals are accepting children who are healthy enough to leave ICUs.

There were 122 children admitted in paediatric ICUs, up from 111 a day earlier. This was revealed by the Daily Statistics of Critical Care Services Ontario.

Only five children admitted to icuses had Covid-19. The province has 112 intensive care beds for children.

Dr Chris Simpson, Ontario’s chief medical director of health, said children’s hospitals across Ontario have been running full since last month. This is due to influenza and respiratory diseases and viruses. Both these diseases have struck a month earlier than expected.

The agency overseeing the province’s health system has instructed general and community hospitals to admit children who are healthy and can drop out of intensive care. But they still need to be hospitalised for recovery.

Ontario: The emergency departments of the Durham region are facing a difficult situation due to the high patient volume and shortage of staff, according to a joint statement issued by Lakeridge Health and The Region of Durham Paramedics Services (RDPS).

A statement issued in this regard said that due to this situation, the waiting time of the less sick people has increased further and due to this shortage of staff in Lakeridge Health Hospitals, it is also difficult to evacuate the ambulances. All residents taking non-essential medical treatment are being asked to adopt other options such as walk-in clinics, primary care, urgent care or virtual care.

Urgent care options are available on Lakeridge Health’s website, which residents can take advantage of. It has also been given an estimated waiting time for all the four emergency departments. The waiting time is refreshed every half an hour. Lakeridge Health says they can’t tell a patient how long they will have to stay in the hospital because it all depends on the patient’s care and the tests he or she does.

It has also been said that if someone needs free medical attention, he should either call 911 or visit the nearest emergency department. The joint statement also said that all people who have been brought to the Lakeridge Health Emergency Department in critical condition and patients whose lives are in danger are taken care of on a priority basis.

The critical condition has been described as if someone is having chest pain or discomfort, not getting a pulse, state of unconsciousness, difficulty in breathing, excessive bleeding, breathlessness, fainting and other serious trauma.

At the end of July, the ICU services at Bowmanville Hospital were temporarily shut down by Lakeridge Health due to a shortage of staff at Ajax Pickering and Oshawa hospitals.

ICU services are also being resumed in this hospital from today along with starting some important nursing services in mid-August.

Last month, Lakeridge Health said there was no damage to the entire network of critical care bed capacity during the shutdown of these services.

Ottawa: Monkeypox in Canada, at total 1168 confirmed cases, have been reported nationally, raising concern for the health authorities.

According to the data, monkeypox cases in Ontario (571); Quebec (453); British Columbia (119); Alberta (19); Saskatchewan (3); Yukon (2) and New Brunswick (1) have been reported so far.

Currently, over 99% of reported cases are male and the median age is 36 years. Among confirmed cases for whom additional information is available, the majority reported intimate sexual contact with other men, officials said.

At this time, to lower the overall risk of getting infected & spreading the virus, PHAC recommends using condoms and practicing safer sex, including having fewer sexual partners & talking openly to partners about sexual health history.

Health Canada advised people of minimizing skin to skin contact, especially at crowded events/venues, like parties, raves & clubs and avoiding close physical contact, incl. sexual contact, with anyone infected or possibly exposed to monkeypox (even if no symptoms) reduces risk.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Fitzgerald said, “We will be launching a focused vaccination campaign for those at highest risk of infection based on what we currently know about monkeypox and its spread in Canada.”

Ontario: Following the Covid-19 virus, health Canada is now struggling to tackle the rising threat of monkey virus as the country has hit 1,008 confirmed cases of this new virus, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

As per the data, most 478 cases are being reported from Ontario province followed by Quebec with 425 cases and British Columbia reported 85 cases while Alberta recorded16 cases of monkeypox. The Saskatchewan and Yuon provinces reported two each.

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a ‘global health emergency’ regarding the virus in view of the growing threat of monkeypox. Experts have appealed to all the people to be constantly careful about this infection.

Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer said in a statement that its National Microbiology Laboratory is performing diagnostic testing for the virus that causes monkeypox. In addition, the laboratory is also conducting whole genome sequencing, an enhanced fingerprint analysis, on Canadian samples of monkeypox. This sequencing will help our experts understand the chains of transmission occurring in Canada. The laboratory is working in close collaboration with provincial and territorial public health laboratories to provide testing guidance and to increase testing capacity for monkeypox.

Toronto: With a shift to more targeted testing, there is increase in in-person activities following easing of public health measures, together with spread of the more transmissible BA.2 variant and some waning of immunity, may be contributing to increased transmission, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada said in a statement.

Health Ministry data indicates that daily average case counts have increased by 28% nationally, indicating a resurgence is underway at the national level (Mar 25-31, 2022). Likewise, laboratory test positivity during the latest 7 day period (Mar 23-29, 2022) increased to 16%, and community wastewater data signal a rising trend in a number of local areas.

The latest provincial and territorial data shows that the average number of people with COVID-19 being treated in hospitals each day during the most recent 7-day period (Mar 25-31, 2022), was 4% higher than last week. During the same time period, the number of people who were being treated in intensive care units (ICU) daily decreased by 4% compared to the prior week, and an average of 36 deaths were reported daily (Mar 25-31, 2022). Keeping infection rates down remains key to further reducing severe illness trends and protecting vulnerable populations over the coming weeks.

Similarly, over 81% of the total population are now fully vaccinated in the country. Age-specific vaccine coverage data, as of March 27, 2022, show that over 88% of people 12 years or older have at least one dose and over 85% are fully vaccinated, while among children aged 5-11 years of age, 57% have at least one dose.
