Ontario is in a debt crisis. Voters must demand fiscal responsibility.

One billion dollars a month.

That’s how much Ontario taxpayers are spending on interest payments alone.

That money isn’t going to health care, roads or schools. It’s covering debt obligations, a growing cost that Ontarians cannot afford to overlook as they head to the polls.

With a provincial election set for Feb. 27, voters will soon decide who will lead the province and, more importantly, who will manage its finances.

Ontario already has the most indebted subnational government in the world. In the past two decades, it has balanced the budget just twice. During that time, borrowing costs have risen, and the province has taken on more debt. That debt now requires billions in annual interest payments—money that could otherwise fund public services.

Every dollar spent servicing debt is a dollar that isn’t going toward frontline services. The more the province borrows, the greater the long-term strain on essential programs such as health care and infrastructure. The challenge for the next government will be balancing priorities while ensuring Ontario’s finances don’t spiral further out of control.

Successive governments of all political stripes have struggled to rein in spending. As borrowing costs climbed, so did Ontario’s reliance on debt to finance operations. The result is billions in interest payments each year—funds that could otherwise support essential services or tax relief.

Yet election campaigns tend to focus on promises rather than fiscal realities. Over the next few weeks, party leaders will unveil spending plans to win over voters. What’s often missing in these discussions is a clear strategy for funding new commitments without deepening the deficit.

If Ontario is to get its finances under control, two key steps are needed.

First, Ontario’s next government should commit to balancing the budget this spring.

In the fall economic update, the provincial government projected a $1.5-billion deficit for 2025-26, with a return to balance the following year. That deficit could easily be wiped out so long as the government doesn’t dip into its $1.5-billion contingency fund. The fiscal path to balance is there—it just requires discipline.

Ontario has done this before. In the mid-1990s, facing a severe fiscal crisis, the province made tough decisions to rein in spending and restore financial stability. More recently, in the late 2010s, the government brought the province close to balance before the COVID-19 pandemic derailed fiscal plans. While the pandemic necessitated emergency spending, Ontario now needs to return to sustainable budgeting.

Second, every dollar of new spending should be offset with a corresponding reduction elsewhere in the budget.

Ontario’s debt now exceeds $400 billion, far more than Quebec’s, which has a lower debt-to-GDP ratio despite historically running deficits. Even California, a state with a much larger economy, has managed to control its debt burden better than Ontario has over the past decade. If these jurisdictions can take meaningful steps to manage their finances, Ontario should be able to do the same.

Politicians often argue that deficits are necessary to fund critical public services. While that may be true in times of crisis, running long-term deficits without a plan to return to balance puts the province in a precarious position. Interest rates fluctuate, and if borrowing costs rise, Ontario’s ability to fund essential services could be compromised. Responsible budgeting isn’t about austerity. It’s about ensuring future governments can still afford to invest in what matters most.

Households manage their budgets by cutting back in one area to make room for new expenses. The provincial government should do the same. If a political party wants to introduce a new spending program, it should identify where the money will come from—whether through savings, efficiencies or reallocation of existing funds.

This election will decide Ontario’s financial future. Without responsible policies, debt will keep rising—leaving the next generation to pay the price.

Political leaders will be tempted to make ambitious promises in the coming weeks. But beyond the headlines, Ontarians must ask a critical question: How will it be paid for?

Ottawa: Two sitting Green Party MPs have threatened to leave the party and sit as independents if the federal council cancelled the party’s leadership race, according to a forwarded internal email.

Expressing concern over the turmoil within the Green Party following the resignation of the party’s president, Kitchener Center MP Mike Morrice’s staff sent an email to the party’s top officials, saying that the party’s federal council was considering a halt to the leadership race and close the Ottawa office would cause irreparable damage.

He wrote that the party will not be able to recover from this loss. If this happens, the party MPs will be left with no option but to leave the party and behave as independent MPs. A Spokesman for the Green Party said on Monday that talks were underway and party officials were thinking of resolving the matter internally and only after that the matter would be made public. In a statement issued on Monday, Mike Morrice said he was deeply disappointed by the infighting within the party.

Former party leader and second sitting MP Elizabeth May declined to comment on the subject. May is also fighting the leadership race with Jonathan Pednault on the joint ticket.

Ottawa: In a veiled attack on new Conservative leader Pierre Polyeuvre, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said Canada needs responsible leadership and not irresponsible politics.

Speaking at the plenary caucus meeting of the three-day retreat ceremony of Liberal MPs, Trudeau said he was the first to congratulate Polyevar for winning his party’s leadership race. Soon after, Trudeau changed his tone, saying it was not the time for politicians to play with people’s sentiments or pit people against each other.

Addressing a gathering of around 150 Liberal MPs, Trudeau said attacking the institutions that make our society safe and free is not a sign of responsible leadership. During the leadership campaign, Polyever accused the Bank of Canada of running away from its responsibilities.

Not only this, he had also said that the Bank of Canada ATM is built for Trudeau’s shah expenses. Polyever has even said that if he becomes prime minister, he will fire The Bank of Canada Governor Tiff McCallum.

Trudeau said advising people to invest in cryptocurrencies to avoid inflation is also not a sign of responsible leadership.

He said that if anyone had heeded that advice and invested his savings in this direction, he would have realized that his money has been wasted. Polyever had also alleged that Trudeau had opened the mouths of bank safes to the public during the pandemic and inflation was the result of that.

“If it’s a mistake to stand up for workers, their families, seniors, young people, businesses, then they will continue to make that mistake,” Trudeau said.

Ottawa: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweaked his cabinet Wednesday, swapping portfolios of ministers Philomena Tasi and Helena Jazac to each other in a small cabinet reshuffle.

In a minor reshuffle, Jazac has been appointed Canada’s new Minister of Public Service and Procurement, while Tassi has been appointed as the Federal Economic Development Agency Minister for Southern Ontario. The reshuffle follows Tassi’s request to spend more time in Southern Ontario due to some family reasons. At the same time, Trudeau also made it clear that he had no desire to reshuffle his cabinet.

ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ. ਦਿੱਲੀ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ 6 ਰਾਜਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਚੋਣ ਰਣਨੀਤੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਪਾਰਟੀ ਨੇ ਹੁਣ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ 6 ਰਾਜਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼, ਉਤਰਾਖੰਡ, ਪੰਜਾਬ, ਹਿਮਾਚਲ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼, ਗੁਜਰਾਤ ਅਤੇ ਗੋਆ ਰਾਜਾਂ ਵਿਚ 2022 ਵਿਚ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਿਆਰੀਆਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਨਾਗਰਿਕ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੁੰਗਾਰਾ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਹੁਣ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਰਾਜਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਸ਼ੋਰ ਨਾਲ ਲੜਨ ਦੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਅਰਵਿੰਦ ਕੇਜਰੀਵਾਲ ਵੀ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਰਾਜਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੌਰਾ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

ਇਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ, ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਕਨਵੀਨਰ ਅਤੇ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਅਰਵਿੰਦ ਕੇਜਰੀਵਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਉਪ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਮਨੀਸ਼ ਸਿਸੋਦੀਆ ਉੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼, ਉਤਰਾਖੰਡ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਜਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਾਂ ਦਾ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਦੌਰਾ ਚੁਣਾਵੀ ਚੋਣ ਬੋਰਡ ਲਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੁੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਪਾਰਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਰਗਰਮ ਹੋਣ ‘ਤੇ ਗੁਜਰਾਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਿਉਂਸਪਲ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੁੰਗਾਰਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ 2022 ਦੀਆਂ ਗੁਜਰਾਤ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਹੈ। ਸਿਰਫ ਸੀਐਮ ਕੇਜਰੀਵਾਲ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਬਲਕਿ ਮਨੀਸ਼ ਸਿਸੋਦੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਆਗੂ ਵੀ ਗੁਜਰਾਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੂਰਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਕੇਂਦਰਤ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਧਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਵਾਰ ਉਸਦੀ ਰਣਨੀਤੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਕਬਜ਼ਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਕੌਮੀ ਕਨਵੀਨਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਅਰਵਿੰਦ ਕੇਜਰੀਵਾਲ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਨੀਤੀ ‘ਤੇ ਤਿੱਖੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਰੱਖ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਦੌਰਾਨ, ਉਸਨੇ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੇ ਮਾਡਲ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਵਟਾਂਦਰੇ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ, ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਵੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਸੱਤਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਇਥੇ ਵੀ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਮਾਡਲ ਲਾਗੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ 300 ਯੂਨਿਟ ਤੱਕ ਮੁਫਤ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਦੇਣ ਦਾ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਵੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦਾ ਦੌਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਰਗਰਮੀਆਂ ਤੇਜ਼ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਰਕਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਉਤਰਾਖੰਡ ਵੀ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਭਾਜਪਾ ਸ਼ਾਸਿਤ ਉੱਤਰਾਖੰਡ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਬੇਦਖਲ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮਿਲੇ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਉਤਰਾਖੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ 200 ਨਹੀਂ ਬਲਕਿ 300 ਯੂਨਿਟ ਤੱਕ ਮੁਫਤ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰੇਗੀ। ਇਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ 24 ਘੰਟੇ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਵੀ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਜਨਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਤਰਾਖੰਡ ਖੁਦ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵੇਚਦਾ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਇੰਨੀ ਮਹਿੰਗੀ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਹੈ।

ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ, ਹੁਣ ਗੋਆ ਵੱਲ ਵਧਦਿਆਂ ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਨੇ ਉਥੇ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਟੁਕੜੇ ਲਗਾਉਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ। ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਕਈ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਨੇਤਾ ਗੋਆ ਵਿਚ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੀ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਉਥਲ-ਪੁਥਲ ‘ਤੇ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਉਥੇ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦਾ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। 2022 ਵਿਚ ਗੋਆ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਦੀਆਂ 40 ਸੀਟਾਂ ਲਈ ਵੀ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਹੋਣੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਇੱਥੇ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਇਸ ਵਾਰ ਚੋਣ ਮੈਦਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਤਰਨ ਦੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਅਰਵਿੰਦ ਕੇਜਰੀਵਾਲ ਵੀ ਅੱਜ ਗੋਆ ਦੇ ਦੌਰੇ ਤੇ ਹਨ।

ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਗੋਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਧਾਇਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੋਰਖਧੰਧਾ ਦਾ ਧੱਕਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਾਲ ਚਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਜਿਹੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ, ਹੁਣ ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਨੇ ਇੱਥੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਧੋਖਾਧੜੀ ਦਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਰਣਨੀਤੀ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਰਗੀ ਇਕ ਇਮਾਨਦਾਰ, ਸਾਫ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਫ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਕ ਦਿਵਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਦੱਸ ਦੇਈਏ ਕਿ ਉੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ 2022 ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਦੇਨਜ਼ਰ ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਜੋਰ-ਸ਼ੋਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਯੂਪੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਚਾਇਤ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਪੰਚਾਇਤਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਧੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਇੱਥੇ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਮਾਂਡ ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ ਸਭਾ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਸੰਜੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਸੀਐਮ ਕੇਜਰੀਵਾਲ ਨੇ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਯੂਪੀ, ਖਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੇਰਠ, ਸਹਾਰਨਪੁਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਮਹਾਂਪੰਚਾਇਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਬੋਧਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਚੋਣ ਰਣਨੀਤੀ ਦਾ ਐਲਾਨ ਵੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
