Chandigarh: Charanjit Singh Channi through his letter to the Governor Punjab Banwarilal Purohit, informed that in a meeting of the Congress Legislative Party held on Sunday, he was elected as the leader of the Congress Legislative Party in the Punjab Legislative Assembly.

Governor Punjab Purohit congratulated him and invited him to take oath as the Chief Minister of Punjab on September 20, 2021 at Punjab Raj Bhawan at 11am

Channi was accompanied by senior Congress leader Harish Rawat, PPCC President Navjot Sidhu, Cabinet Ministers Brahm Mohindra, Sukhjinder Randhawa, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sukh Sarkaria and Aruna Chaudhary.

Chandigarh: The All India Congress Committee has on Sunday announced that Dalit leader Charanjit Singh Channi will be the new Chief Minister of Punjab.

This announcement comes a day after turmoil in Punjab politics that saw pulls and pressures from several claimants.

He was the leader of the opposition from 2015 until 2017 when Congress was voted to power.

Earlier, there were reports that the Congress high command has cleared the name of Sukhjinder Randhawa as the new CLP leader.

However, Harish Rawat, the AICC General Secretary in charge of Punjab, made a formal announcement on Sunday evening.

He is the MLA from the Chamkaur Sahib Assembly Constituency. Earlier, he was accused of sending lewd messages to a female IAS officer.
